A Life Well-Lived: Remembering Gilles Marcel Rouleau
The Rouleau family shares with profound sorrow the news of the passing of our cherished husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Gilles Rouleau, who left us just one day before his 80th birthday.
Gilles entered this world in Sherbrooke, Quebec, on January 7, 1946, but his family later relocated to Ontario in the early 1950s to support his father's career in logging. He spent 59 wonderful years married to his high school sweetheart, Judi — a partnership that many admire for its depth and resilience. Their relationship was a true embodiment of companionship, filled with laughter and an unwavering bond of love. Together, they embraced life's adventures, valued time spent with loved ones, and celebrated the beauty found in everyday moments. Above all, Gilles' love for Judi was immense, shining through in every action he took.
As a proud father, Gilles raised two sons, Michael (with Renee) and Steven (with Paula), instilling in them the importance of respect, hard work, and high expectations. His parenting style, while sometimes stern, was rooted in love and shaped their characters profoundly. Behind his serious demeanor lay a warm heart, a quick wit, and an unconditional love for his family.
Gilles also enjoyed the role of a doting grandfather to Marc, Gabrielle (with Andrew), Sydney, and Joshua (with Julia). His pride in their accomplishments was boundless; he attended every game, recital, and performance with enthusiasm. Grandfather always welcomed their stories, adventures, and successes with open arms. The values he imparted to them—strength, determination, deep love, integrity, and the spirit of hard work—will undoubtedly influence them throughout their lives, shaping not only their childhoods but also the individuals they have grown to be.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Leo Georges and Rose Aimee (Bisson) Rouleau. Gilles is also remembered lovingly by his siblings: the late Renaud; Nicole (married to Rick Howe); Alain (married to Val); the late Daniel (with Cindy); and Lynne. Additionally, he was preceded by his in-laws, Jim and Marie Murphy, as well as brothers-in-law Jim (the late Shirley), John, and Michael Murphy. Gilles was a treasured uncle, great-uncle, and cousin to many.
Gilles was a man of remarkable talents with a unique ability to work with both steel and wood. In 1985, he co-founded Ro-Von Steel Limited, eventually establishing himself independently. He retired in 2006, taking immense pride in the business he built and the reputation he earned through sheer dedication and skill.
One of his standout achievements during retirement was the creation of the Iron Maiden, a tugboat-style trawler that he designed and constructed entirely out of steel from start to finish. This ambitious project commenced in 2007 and saw its launch in 2012, showcasing Gilles' craftsmanship, persistence, and vision. For a decade, Gilles and Judi made lasting memories aboard the Iron Maiden at A-Dock in Bellevue Marina, reveling in the joy it brought them.
In addition to his projects, Gilles loved to travel and explore new places with Judi and close friends. Together, they traversed Canada from coast to coast, ventured through Alaska, Mexico, and California with Mariette and Fidele, explored Europe and Florida with Al, Val, Dan, and Cindy, enjoyed boating escapades with Brian and Leona, attended concerts with Susan and John, and relaxed in Phoenix with Betty and Arnold. Each journey was characterized by laughter, friendship, and a shared passion for discovery.
Back home, Gilles found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: gathering around the wood stove in his garage, playing cards with Guy and Marilyn, savoring a Manhattan or a shot of brandy, and being ever willing to assist a neighbor, whether it was snowblowing a driveway or lending a hand when needed. His interests spanned a wide array of activities, including hunting, fishing, boating, cheering for the Montreal Canadiens, and enjoying time at camp up north, particularly at Achigan Lake, which he shared with his brothers.
While Gilles was known for many qualities, his unwavering devotion to family stands out above all. The legacy of pride, love, leadership, and hard work he leaves behind will continue to resonate through the countless lives he influenced.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Woolridge, Dr. Hill, Dr. Reich, Dr. Berry, Dr. Aziz, and Dr. Webb for their compassionate care during his final days.
In accordance with the family's wishes, a memorial mass will take place on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 1 p.m., led by Father Rex Lumine at St. Gerard Majella (211 Pentagon Blvd.), followed by a committal service at Holy Sepulchre — Columbarium.
