In a thrilling encounter, the Stormers secured a 39-26 victory over Leicester, leaving the Tigers' chances for progression in the Champions Cup hanging by a thread.
The Investec Champions Cup clash saw the Stormers (15) tally 39 points, thanks to tries from Evan Roos, Andre-Hugo Venter, Leolin Zas, JD Schickerling, and Imad Khan. They also benefited from three conversions by Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and one from Khan, along with a couple of penalties. On the other side, Leicester (14) managed to score 26 points with tries from George Pearson, Will Wand, Jamie Blamire, and Tom Manz, while James Searle contributed three conversions.
After this defeat, Leicester is left anxiously awaiting the outcome of other matches to see if they will advance to the knockout stage of the Champions Cup. Despite fielding a team missing several international players, the Tigers put forth a commendable effort and seemed poised to earn two bonus points. However, a late try by Imad Khan meant they could only secure one point for scoring four tries.
Currently, Leicester has climbed to fourth position in Pool Three. Yet, their fate hangs in the balance; should La Rochelle manage to gain even a single point in their upcoming home match against Harlequins, Leicester will be eliminated from the competition. Conversely, the Stormers' triumph guarantees them a spot in the knockout phase, and they will host a last-16 match if La Rochelle emerges victorious.
The excitement kicked off early for the Stormers, who surged to a 14-point lead within the first quarter-hour. Evan Roos was the first to touch down, followed quickly by Andre-Hugo Venter's try. Nevertheless, Leicester responded skillfully, with George Pearson and Will Wand scoring back-to-back tries that shifted the momentum in favor of the Tigers.
Early in the second half, both teams exchanged tries as Jamie Blamire scored for Leicester, only for Leolin Zas to respond with another try for the Stormers, keeping the contest finely balanced.
Both teams were able to earn bonus points for their tries, with JD Schickerling crossing the line for the Stormers before Tom Manz scored for the Tigers. However, it was Imad Khan’s late try that ultimately dashed Leicester's hopes of qualification.
The match started on a rough note for the Tigers as prop Will Hurd received a yellow card for a high tackle just five minutes in. Stormers quickly capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Roos scoring from close range. The second try came shortly after when hooker Venter broke off from a maul to score in the corner.
Leicester's first points came fortuitously when a kick hit the corner flag and rebounded off Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s leg, leading to a line-out from which Pearson scored. The Tigers took the lead at 14-12 when Wand executed an excellent run through the defense, though they missed a chance to extend that lead when Searle failed to convert a straightforward penalty.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu then demonstrated skill by converting a penalty to regain the lead for the Stormers just before halftime. The Tigers struck again shortly after the break with Blamire's try, but the Stormers quickly countered with Zas’ third try, putting them ahead at 22-21.
As the match progressed, Feinberg-Mngomezulu faced a moment of controversy when he was sin-binned for a forearm to Wand’s head while defending. Surprisingly, the Stormers managed to excel despite being a man down, with Schickerling scoring their bonus point try, taking the score to 29-21.
Khan expanded the lead with another penalty kick, but Leicester's Manz managed to clinch a consolation try for a bonus point before Khan sealed the game with a final try in the closing minute.
