Ford Bronco's Australian Arrival: Meet the Electric Bronco New Energy (2026)

The Ford Bronco is finally coming to Australia, but it's not the off-roading icon many have been eagerly awaiting. Instead, the market will receive the Bronco New Energy, an extended-range electric SUV with a substantial battery, an impressive claimed driving range, and potentially sharp pricing. This Chinese-built model, offered by JMC Ford (Ford's joint venture with Jiangling Motors), is set to arrive in Australia either late this year or early in 2027, with pricing expected to start from around $48,000 and stretch to just under $60,000. This makes it significantly more affordable than the US-built Bronco off-roader and places it squarely in the heart of the Australian SUV market.

One of the key features of the Bronco New Energy is its use of an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) drivetrain, similar to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) but with a combustion engine acting as a generator to recharge the battery rather than driving the wheels directly. This setup offers a more electric-like driving experience while still providing the range and flexibility of a combustion engine. The vehicle is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 43.7kWh battery pack, which is notably large for an EREV or PHEV.

The Bronco New Energy is claimed to offer close to 200km of electric driving range and a total driving range of around 1000km, making it a competitive choice for those seeking an eco-friendly yet practical SUV. It also boasts impressive performance, completing the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.8 seconds, outpacing many family SUVs in its price range. However, it's important to note that the Bronco New Energy is not a direct replacement for the rugged US-market model. It's based on a car-style monocoque platform rather than a ladder-frame chassis and has a slightly different size and seating capacity.

Despite its different platform, the Bronco New Energy is expected to offer some light off-road capability, aided by chunkier all-terrain tyres on certain versions. Ground clearance ranges from 215mm to 220mm, and the vehicle can wade through 600mm of water. Available off-road equipment in China includes locking front and rear differentials, multiple terrain modes, and an off-road crawl mode, further enhancing its off-road potential.

The interior of the Bronco New Energy is a significant departure from the Ford models currently sold in Australia. Chinese-market versions feature a more premium interior design, a large 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and equipment not commonly seen at this price point, such as a centre-console fridge. The vehicle uses batteries supplied by BYD, one of the world's largest battery manufacturers, further enhancing its electric capabilities.

The arrival of the Bronco New Energy in Australia is particularly timely for Ford Australia. The brand heavily relies on the Ranger ute and Everest SUV, both of which will be impacted by the federal government's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard. A lower-emissions SUV with a long electric driving range would provide Ford with a model to help offset the higher-emitting models while also offering Australian buyers a more affordable entry point into the Bronco family.

While final pricing, specifications, release timing, and the local name of the Bronco New Energy are yet to be confirmed, if Ford can secure a price close to the $50,000 mark and offer almost 200km of electric range, it could be one of its most significant new models in years. The Bronco New Energy's combination of electric range, performance, and potentially competitive pricing makes it a compelling addition to the Australian market, offering a unique blend of practicality and eco-friendliness.
